CULTURAL TOWNSHIP SCHOOL & CRAFTTour Code: FE02 Depart the city for Langa with our African Guide to visit the Tsoga Enviromental Centre, an important community hub that provides environmental education and food-growing programmes, and also runs an income-generating waste recycling centre. Next, we visit a traditional healer (or Sangoma) to learn about their important role in modern urban African communities as traditional herbalists, diviners, social counsellers and interpreters of the will of the ancestors. Continue to Gugulethu where we visit one of the local schools to interact with both teachers and students and experience their unique learning environment. We lunch at a local restaurant, sampling typical African food and hospitality, before moving on to the sprawling township of Khayelithsha - an area once intended to contain thousands of squatter families and which today, despite social improvement and increased services, still lags behind much of the rest of suburban Cape Town. The Townships also have many success stories and we visit a highly successful Craft Market as well as the famous Radio Zibonele, a once-illegal radio station started with homemade equipment and manned by volunteers and which is now a fully-fledged station and trusted community voice. |
